MEET KATIE

Journalist, writer, truth-teller.

I'm Katie Redefer, a 23-year-old journalist and media specialist who graduated from Emerson College with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism. I created The Redefer Report to showcase my literary works and collaborate with others who share my vision for a more innovative and imaginative media industry.

My journalistic works are diverse, ranging from breaking news and crime reporting to lifestyle and human-interest stories, arts and entertainment commentary, and long-form investigative pieces. I've been published in various reputable publications, including The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and U.S News and World Report.

I've also worked as a staff reporter for my hometown paper, Delaware State News (now known as Daily State News,) and many of my stories were published in the Associated Press newswire.

In addition to journalism, I specialize in creative writing, including fiction and non-fiction works. I've always been drawn to creative writing, especially short stories, novellas, and personal essays. I have a confidently-humorous, yet introspective and erudite written voice, aiming to both entrance and educate with my writing.

In college, I served as Editor-in-chief of The Berkeley Beacon, Emerson's sole student-run newspaper, as well as Vice President for Emerson's chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) I also worked as a Proofreader and Copyeditor for YourMag, one of Emerson's most popular student magazines. Additionally, I was a member of Sigma Pi Theta, a local social sorority at Emerson College.

Katie's
Boston Globe
Experience

I worked as a co-op for The Boston Globe's city desk for six months from July-December 2021. Through the co-op program, I served as a full-time metro correspondent, accumulating more than 150+ bylines in The Globe.

I continued reporting for The Globe part-time for several months after completing my co-op as I finished my journalism degree at Emerson.

More on what I learned at
The Boston Globe

While working as a co-op at The Boston Globe, I reported on breaking news, crime, fires, natural disasters, COVID-19, and more. I also would frequently write feature stories and profiles for the weekend edition of The Globe. This was an ideal scenario for me, as I got to fine-tune my breaking news reporting skills, while also building on my pre-existing skills in feature writing.

I learned how to interview lots of different kinds of sources, whether it be a police officers, politicians, or a regular person on the street, and how to successfully interact with my editors. I also improved my writing and reporting speed, as I frequently wrote breaking news briefs on short deadlines. Perhaps most importantly, I learned how to manageably keep track of all the important news stories in Boston by curating a comprehensive TweetDeck feed, reading local news sites and watching local news broadcasts, and regularly checking news tips sent to The Globe.

For future Globe co-ops at the city desk, my biggest piece of advice is to always double fact-check everything, as it's easy to make small mistakes while reporting on short deadlines. It's also important to remember how far kindness can go while reporting; sources won't talk to you if you aren't nice and approachable. In some instances, I've gotten reluctant sources to agree to go on-record just by making friendly conversation with them. Additionally, it's a good idea to tweet the links to all of your stories and bylines. This makes it easier for you to gain a following as a journalist, and it's also convenient to use as a portfolio of sorts to keep track of all your stories.

Keep scrolling to see a portfolio of some of my favorite stories I wrote for The Boston Globe during my co-op.
