Incumbent Republican Mitch McConnell won his 7th senate race in Kentucky on Tuesday night, defeating Democratic nominee Amy McGrath.
With 84% of voting reported late Tuesday night, McConnell won the state with at least 1.1 million votes, while McGrath won more than 700,000 votes. McConnell secured a larger lead than the polls predicted, many of which estimating a 10-point lead for the Republican senator. McGrath won only 38% of the vote, while McConnell won 58% of the vote.
Although McConnell was expected to win tonight, the remaining question is whether or not he will remain majority leader of the Senate, or if Democrats will take control of the Senate and effectively demote him to minority leader. McConnell previously served as minority leader of the Senate in 2015.
